When we take young children outside, something predictable happens. They move. They run toward what is large and loud and obvious. They respond to what calls for their attention. This is natural, and it is good. It is what children are built to do.

But looking and noticing are not quite the same thing.

Looking is what happens when something enters a child’s field of vision. Noticing is what happens when a child pauses — genuinely pauses — and begins to examine it. Noticing involves attention that is chosen, not just received.

Many parents assume that observation develops on its own. That given enough outdoor time, a child will naturally become curious and attentive. And to some degree this is true. But like most cognitive and language skills, observation deepens significantly when there is a gentle structure around it — when a child is invited to look closely, rather than simply given the chance to look at all.

The difference matters. A child who learns to observe carefully has better language to describe what she sees. She begins to ask more specific questions. She notices change — the leaf that has turned, the puddle that has dried, the snail that was here yesterday and is not here today. She starts to connect what she observes to what she already knows, which is one of the earliest and most important forms of thinking.

Language grows when children have things to describe. The richer the observation, the richer the words that follow. A child who notices only that there is “a bug” has less to say than a child who notices that the bug is small, shiny, and moving in a particular direction. Specific observations generate specific vocabulary. And vocabulary is one of the strongest predictors of reading comprehension later in life.

Science Thinking

Science is fundamentally a practice of noticing. Every scientific question begins with someone observing something and wondering what it means. When a three-year-old asks “why does that flower smell but this one doesn’t?” she is doing exactly what scientists do — collecting information through her senses and beginning to generate questions about it. The habit of observing carefully is the beginning of every scientific enquiry she will ever make.

Sustained Attention

Attention is increasingly rare, and increasingly valuable. Children who learn early to hold their focus on something small — a caterpillar, a cracked piece of bark, the way shadows move — are practising something they will need for every form of deep learning throughout their lives. Observation walks are quiet attention training, dressed as a walk.

What is less often noted is that this kind of attention is different in quality from the attention generated by screens or fast-moving media. Screens provide stimulus; the viewer receives it. Outdoor observation requires the child to generate her own interest — to find something worth looking at, and then to sustain that looking. This is an active, effortful kind of attention. It is also the kind that transfers most reliably to reading, to mathematics, to conversations, to anything that requires a child to stay with something long enough to understand it.

Pattern Recognition

Children who observe carefully begin, over time, to notice patterns. The same spider web appears each morning and is gone by afternoon. The tree at the corner looks different every time they pass it. The puddle grows after rain and shrinks by the following afternoon. These observations — accumulated over many walks, over weeks and months — build a kind of informal science that is more deeply understood than any fact taught in isolation.

Pattern recognition is foundational in mathematics, language, and science. And the version of it that develops through outdoor observation is particularly durable because it is grounded in direct sensory experience. A child who has watched a puddle evaporate over several visits does not need to be told what evaporation means. She has already observed it. The word, when it comes, will attach to something real.

Comparing and Categorising

The moment a child says “this one is bigger” or “these ones are the same colour,” she is doing early mathematics and logic. Comparison is one of the foundational operations of rational thought. It requires that you hold two things in mind simultaneously and identify how they relate. Outdoor observation makes this natural and concrete.

Curiosity

Perhaps most importantly: observation generates questions. And questions are the engines of curiosity. A child who has been helped to notice things closely — to look again, to look differently — develops a habit of active engagement with the world. She does not pass through environments. She examines them.

This quality, once established, tends to persist. What Children Learn To Notice Before They Learn To Read

There is a long list of things we believe children need before they can begin to learn: letters, phonics, numbers, shapes, colours. These things matter. But there is something that comes before all of them, something so quiet and ordinary that it rarely makes it onto any list.

Noticing.

Long before a child learns what a letter is, she is learning whether things look the same or different. Long before she learns what a number means, she is learning that some collections are larger than others. Long before she learns what cause and effect means as a concept, she is learning that when she drops something it falls, that when it rains the path gets wet, that the bird that was on the branch this morning is sometimes there and sometimes not.

These are not pre-academic skills. They are something more foundational than that. They are the raw material from which all later learning is built.

When a child learns to read, she is learning — among many other things — to notice small differences between similar shapes. The letters b and d look almost the same. The letters p and q are mirrors of each other. A child who has spent years noticing the difference between a round stone and an oval one, between a leaf with smooth edges and one with serrated edges, has been training exactly the visual discrimination skills that reading requires.

When a child learns mathematics, she is learning to notice pattern and sequence. The child who has observed that puddles appear after rain and disappear when the sun comes out has already been practising one of the core cognitive operations of early mathematics: if this, then that.

When a child develops scientific thinking, she is learning to form hypotheses and test them against observation. The child who crouched over an ant and watched it long enough to see where it was going has already done this. She had a question. She stayed long enough to gather information. She drew a tentative conclusion. That is scientific method, in miniature, in a two-and-a-half-year-old.

None of this means that observation walks are reading preparation in disguise. They are not. The case for them does not need to rest on academic readiness, and framing them that way would be a kind of reduction. The case rests on something simpler: that a child who learns to look closely at the world is building the cognitive architecture — the attention, the vocabulary, the curiosity, the tolerance for sustained looking — that makes every kind of learning easier.

The Missing Piece

Why Most Walks Don’t Build Observation Skills

This is perhaps the most important distinction in this article, and the one most parents haven’t been told.

Walking outside does not automatically build observation skills. Being in nature does not automatically produce attentiveness. Time spent outdoors is valuable — genuinely, deeply valuable — but it is not, on its own, attention training.

Here is what typically happens during an ordinary walk with a young child.

The child runs. She notices large things: a dog, a truck, another child. She responds to whatever calls loudest for her attention. When something interests her she may pause — but usually only for a few seconds before she moves on to the next large thing. This is not a failure of observation. It is developmentally appropriate behaviour. The brain at this stage is attuned to novelty, movement, and social information. These are survival instincts, not deficits.

The problem is not that children don’t look. The problem is that looking at a large, obvious, moving thing is not the same as the careful, sustained, close attention that builds the cognitive architecture we are talking about.

Consider the three assumptions that turn out to be false:

Each of these assumptions is plausible enough that most parents never question them. Of course a child who spends time outdoors will learn to notice things. Of course being surrounded by nature builds curiosity. And in a broad, general sense — yes. The outdoors is rich. It does offer more variety, more texture, more sensory complexity than a screen.

But rich environments don’t automatically teach children how to slow down and look closely. That skill requires a different kind of invitation.

Children who have spent thousands of hours outdoors but have never been taught how to observe closely are like children who have spent thousands of hours surrounded by books but have never been taught how to read. The material is there. The capacity is there. The specific skill — the deliberate, trained part — is what is missing.

What the Observation Walk does is supply the missing layer: a reason to look closely. And that reason, given consistently and warmly, is enough to change what a child experiences on every walk she will take for the rest of her life.

A Small Moment I Almost Missed
She had been crouching there for four minutes before I noticed she wasn’t moving.

We were on a walk we had taken dozens of times — the loop around the park that takes about fifteen minutes, twenty if she stops for the swings. I was about ten steps ahead before I realised she wasn’t following.

She was crouched at the edge of the path, completely still, looking at something in the grass. I called to her twice. She didn’t look up.

When I went back, I crouched beside her. There was a small ant, carrying a piece of something that looked far too large for it. The ant was moving in a slow, deliberate arc, and she was watching it with an expression I can only describe as genuine concentration. Not the bright, delighted look of a child who has spotted something interesting. Something quieter than that. The look of someone actually thinking.

I didn’t say anything for a moment. Then she said, without looking up: “It’s going somewhere important.”

She was two and a half.

We were late to wherever we were going. We stayed for another five minutes anyway. When the ant disappeared into a crack in the path, she stood up, took my hand, and we kept walking. She didn’t mention it again that day.

But I think about it often. Not because it was remarkable in any cinematic sense — it wasn’t. Because it was a reminder that observation, real observation, doesn’t need to be taught through curriculum or programme. It needs, mostly, to be not interrupted. She had found something worth noticing. The only thing I needed to do was stop hurrying and notice alongside her.

Observation Creates Better Conversations

There is a particular kind of conversation that happens when children are asked about what they observe, rather than what they know. It is richer, longer, and more generative than the question-and-answer exchanges most children experience every day.

The typical outdoor conversation tends to run on quizzing. Parents, often without realising it, ask testing questions: “What colour is that?” “What is it called?” “How many are there?” These are not bad questions. But they invite a specific, closed kind of response — the child retrieves what she already knows, answers, and the exchange is complete.

Observation-based questions work differently. They ask the child to generate language, not retrieve it. And generating language — finding words for something you are actually looking at — is one of the most powerful language development experiences available to a young child.

Invites reasoning. The child must articulate her observation — the most valuable language work of all.
“Can you count them?”
Shifts focus from observation to performance. The child counts correctly or incorrectly, and that becomes the point.
“What else do you see?”
Extends the observation. Encourages sustained looking and layered description beyond the first thing noticed.
“Is it big or small?”
Binary choice. The child picks one. It builds no particular language or thinking.
“What does it remind you of?”
Connects new experience to existing knowledge through analogy — one of the earliest forms of higher-order thinking.

The difference is not subtle once you look for it. Children asked observation questions talk for longer, use more complex sentences, and are more willing to speculate — to say “I think it might be…” rather than staying silent because they don’t know the answer.

This matters beyond the walk. A child who learns that her observations are worth articulating develops a habit of translating experience into language. That habit becomes — in school, in friendships, in every domain of her intellectual life — an enormous advantage.

The Observation Walk

The simplest version of this practice needs no preparation, no materials, and no special location. It is a reframe of an ordinary walk — a shift in what you say as you leave the door.

Instead of: “Let’s go for a walk.”

Try: “Let’s find something…”

That single addition gives the walk a purpose. The child is not just accompanying you — she is looking for something specific. And the act of looking for something specific is the thing that trains observation.

Here are five starting prompts that work across a wide range of ages and environments. They require nothing from the outdoor space except that it exists.

An insect. A leaf in the wind. A cloud. Water in a puddle. A bird. Moving things invite sustained watching rather than a glance and a move-on.

Smaller than your thumb
A tiny ant. A seed. A pebble fragment. A small bud. This prompt slows children down and requires genuinely close looking. It also gives scale meaning.

Above your head
A branch. A cloud. A bird on a wire. A window. Leaves in the canopy. This simply shifts where they look. Most children look forward and down. Looking up is a different kind of noticing.

That wasn’t here last time
A puddle. A fallen branch. A new flower. A spider’s web. This prompt builds memory and attunes children to change over time — one of the deepest forms of observation.
A Note On These Prompts
Each of these is a frame, not a task. Your child does not need to find the “correct” thing. If they find something that partially fits — a mostly-round stone, something that almost moves — that conversation is exactly the point. The imperfect match is where the thinking happens.

Parent Language

What To Say During An Observation Walk

The prompts above give the walk a structure. But what you say while you’re walking matters just as much. The language a parent uses during observation shapes what the child understands observation to be — whether it is about finding right answers, or about genuinely exploring what is there.

These six phrases open observation rather than close it. None of them requires a correct response. All of them leave space for the child to think.

“I wonder why…”
Modelling wondering out loud. The parent does not need to know the answer. The point is that the question is worth asking.
“What do you notice?”
Open and unguided. The child reports what draws their attention — which is itself useful information about how they see.
“How does it feel?”
Brings the body into the observation. Touch and texture add another layer of language and sensory memory.
“What is different about this one?”
Introduces comparison. Two leaves, two stones, two birds. What has changed? What is the same? Early logic, quietly embedded.
“What does it remind you of?”
Connects new observations to existing knowledge. This is how children build and link mental frameworks — through resemblance and analogy.
“What do you think will happen next?”
Turns observation into prediction. For a moving insect, a cloud, a puddle edge. The beginning of scientific hypothesis.

What Observation Looks Like At Different Ages

Observation walks work across a surprisingly wide age range, but what children notice — and how they process it — changes as they grow. Understanding the developmental arc helps parents know what to expect, and what to gently extend.

Return to the same locations across time. Ask “What do you think will have changed?” before entering a familiar space. Introduce simple recording — drawing what was there, noting what’s different.

These are broad patterns, not thresholds. A two-year-old on a good day may surprise you with her comparisons. A four-year-old may spend an entire walk absorbed in a single stone. What matters is that the walk creates time and permission for looking closely, at whatever level that happens to be on that particular afternoon.

The Goal Is Not To Find The Right Answer

There is a version of this kind of activity that feels like a quiz. The parent asks “what colour is that?” and waits. The child answers, or doesn’t. The parent confirms or corrects. And then they move on.

That is not observation. That is performance.

What observation walks offer — when they are held lightly — is something different. They offer a child the experience of looking at the world and having her looking taken seriously. The insect she is watching is worth watching. The shape she has noticed is worth noticing. The question she has generated is genuinely interesting, even if no one can answer it right now.

This is not a small thing. Many children move through their days in environments shaped entirely by adults, where the adult knows what is important and what is not, what is worth attention and what can be hurried past. An observation walk reverses this. The child’s attention determines what is worth examining. The parent follows.

What happens to a child who experiences this regularly? She begins to trust her own noticing. She doesn’t wait to be told what is interesting. She develops a kind of quiet confidence in her own perception that is, in the long run, more valuable than any specific piece of knowledge she will ever be taught.

A child who tells you the rock is “angry-coloured” has observed something real about its texture or shade, expressed in the only language available to her. That is not a wrong answer. That is a child doing exactly what good observers do — finding language for something that doesn’t have a word yet.

What is worth understanding about curiosity — the deep, sustained kind — is that it rarely develops through instruction. It develops through the experience of noticing something and having that noticing go somewhere. Not to a correct answer. To another question. To a longer look. To the feeling that there is more here than I first thought. That feeling, repeated across hundreds of small moments in early childhood, creates something structural. It creates a child who expects the world to be interesting if she looks carefully enough.

This is not a small developmental outcome. It is, arguably, the most important one.

You can try a new prompt on the next thing she encounters, or you can simply walk alongside her and wait for the next natural pause. Observation walks are not designed to be held to. They are a frame you can pick up and put down as the walk itself requires. The prompts are invitations, not requirements. Some walks will produce twenty minutes of focused looking. Others will produce thirty seconds. Both are fine.

Do we need nature trails or green spaces?

No. The prompts in this article work in any outdoor environment — a pavement, a car park, a small garden, a suburban street. Rough surfaces, round objects, things that move, things above your head: all of these exist in urban environments as readily as in forests. In some ways, built environments offer more variety of texture and material than green spaces.
